FAQS
A toothbrush effectively removes plaque from buccal, lingual/palatal, and occlusal surfaces but falls short in thoroughly cleaning the interdental area. This area is challenging to access due to the interdental gingiva filling the space between teeth. Interdental cleaning is crucial for preventing and managing caries and periodontal disease, necessitating tools like interdental brushes (IDB), floss, oral irrigators…
Different studies conclude that interdental brushes are the most effective for interdental plaque removal. They clean a larger root area due to their lateral bristles, making them effective, easy to use, and preferred by patients.
Interdental brushes come in various sizes. Dental professionals can help identify the correct size and demonstrate proper use. The right brush should fill the interdental space completely without causing gum injury. Initial bleeding is normal and indicates inflammation, which will subside with continued use.
PHD (passage hole diameter) is defined by ISO 16409 and determines the minimum size of the diameter through which an interdental brush can pass without deforming its stem. It considers various parameters, making it the main criterion for selecting interdental brush sizes.
- Straight handle: Linear design, useful for precise and controlled cleaning, providing stability and firmness.
- Angled handle: Non-linear design, better access to posterior areas, adapting to oral anatomy for improved cleaning.
Consult your dentist to determine the most suitable interdental cleaning method. When the interdental space is wide or open, interdental brushes are recommended.
Interprox® offers a range of brushes in different PHD sizes. The PHD refers to the size of the interdental space (in mm) and is the smallest space the brush can pass through.
If you don’t know your PHD, start with the smallest size (Interprox® nano 0.7) and increase if the brush moves too freely. The correct brush should fit snugly without force.
Colors are not equivalent between brands. Compare PHD measurements instead of brush or wire diameters to find the right size.
Interprox® brushes are not single-use and their durability depends on the mode and frequency of use.
